When to Plant Pumpkins in Central Texas
Dreaming of homegrown pumpkins this fall? July is the perfect time to plant pumpkin seeds in Central Texas. Most pumpkin varieties need 90 to 120 days to mature, so planting in early to mid-July gives vines plenty of time to produce pumpkins before Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Give Pumpkins Plenty of Space
Pumpkins are vigorous growers. Most varieties need 50 to 100 square feet per plant, depending on the type. Space hills 4 to 8 feet apart, or plant rows 6 to 10 feet apart to allow vines to spread and improve air circulation.
How to Plant Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkins grow best in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil.
You can plant seeds:
- In mounds (hills), placing 3 to 5 seeds in each mound.
- In rows, spacing seeds about 2 to 3 feet apart, then thinning to the strongest plants.
Plant seeds 1 inch deep and water thoroughly after planting.
Help Seeds Get Started
Central Texas summers are hot, so keep the seedbed consistently moist while seeds germinate. A light layer of mulch helps retain moisture without smothering emerging seedlings. During extreme afternoon heat, provide temporary shade with shade cloth or a lightweight cover until seedlings develop their first true leaves. Once established, remove the shade so plants receive full sun.
Pollination Matters
Pumpkin plants produce separate male and female flowers. Bees transfer pollen between the flowers, making pollination essential for fruit production. Encourage pollinators by avoiding insecticide sprays during bloom and planting pollinator-friendly flowers nearby. If bee activity is low, you can hand-pollinate by transferring pollen from a male flower to the center of a female flower using a small paintbrush or by gently touching the flowers together.
With sunshine, regular watering, and a little patience, you’ll be harvesting your own pumpkins just in time for fall decorating, carving, and baking.
