Short Day Onion Varieties for Central Texas:

“Short-day” onion varieties quit forming leaves and begin forming bulbs when the day length reaches 10-12 hours, and are best for Southern Gardens. The following varieties have proven to be the best for Central Texas.

 

 

1015Y:  This globe-shaped onion up to 6” wide is named after the ideal date the seed is planted (October 15). The off-white flesh is sweet and great for cooking, salads, etc. It takes  about 115 days from planting to harvest. Storage potential is 2-3 months.

Texas Legend : This yellow, sweet, globe-shaped onion was bred from the 1015Y to have more healthful benefits. The 6” onions mature about 10-14 days earlier than the 1015Y and take about 100-105 days from planting to harvest.  Their storage potential is 3-4 months.

White Bermuda: This sweet, white 3”-4” flat shaped onion matures at 85 days. It is an heirloom variety that is ideal for green onions and cocktail onions with a mild flavor. These take about 95 days from planting to harvest of a mature bulb, but harvest of smaller onions can take place earlier. Storage potential is 2 months.

Early Texas White: This large (6”) sweet, white globe-shaped onion has good disease resistance. It takes 105-110 days to harvest and has a storage potential of 2-3 months.

Yellow Granex: A large (5”) sweet yellow onion with a semi-flat shape. It is a cross between 1015Y and Bermuda and is the onion grown in Vidalia, Georgia that has been given the name “Vidalia Onion” when grown there. While they may not taste exactly the same as those grown in Georgia, they will be the sweetest onion in your garden! These take about 90-100 days from planting to harvest. Storage potential is 1-2 months.

Southern Belle Red: This 4” red, globe-shaped onion is sweet enough to eat fresh. It has good disease and bolting resistance. These mature about 105-110 days from planting to harvest. It has a storage potential of approximately 2 months.

Red Creole: If you like a spicy red onion, this one is for you. The dark red, 3”-4” onion has a spicy, Cajun flavor and takes 100-110 days from planting to harvest.  It has a storage potential of 6-7 months!
